Software Engineer, Programming Languages

Mysten Labs believes that decentralized and open protocols are the bedrock of the internet of value. This is why at Mysten Labs, we are creating foundational infrastructure to accelerate the adoption of decentralized protocols based on blockchain technologies.

As part of the Programming Languages team, you will be responsible for advancing the state of the art of the Move language platform. This includes evolving the design of the language together with the Move community, as well as contributing to a wide spectrum of tools from improving security for Move up to better developer usability. You will be closely working with the Mysten DevX team which develops smart contracts in Move.

Programming Language (PL) Engineers design, build, and improve safe abstractions of complex systems. Mysten PL engineers enhance the programmability networks, optimize runtimes for high performance, and harden toolchains against attackers.

What You’ll Do:

• Developing features and improvements to the Move programming language.
• Collaborating with the blockchain team on the programming language interfaces, execution, and storage
• Work closely with smart contract developers and application designers to develop safely and with scalability in mind.
• Building advanced tooling for Move: static analyzers, fuzzers, blockchain « surfers », code indexing
• Improve the interaction between Move and web/mobile apps by building frameworks, standards, and libraries.
• Continuing to evolve and support the Move open-source community.

Our Ideal Candidate Would Have:

• 5+ years of experience in hands-on software engineer
• Expertise in compiler implementation, runtimes, optimization, or static analysis–we’re looking for someone who can read and understand research papers from the field and design systems based on them. Bonus points if you’ve written such papers!
• Experience with tools, practices, and programming patterns for ensuring software correctness
• Experience with a systems programming language such as Rust, Go, Swift, or C/C++ Interest or experience in “smart contract” languages, especially Move and Solidity
• Interest or experience in open, decentralized, permissionless technologies, and the intersection of contemporary technology, economics, finance and governance.
• Exceptional written communication skills and an enthusiasm for clear and concise.
• Willingness to participate in technical discussions and reviews synchronously, asynchronously, in person or remotely
